Cool Day Trips From Copenhagen, Denmark

Although there is plenty to do in Copenhagen, Denmark’s vibrant capital, and enough to keep you busy for the duration of your stay, it’s important to look beyond the city itself for the wide world of wonders on its doorstep. From historic castles to charming towns and scenic landscapes, there’s something to capture the heart of just about anyone.

If you’re looking for a little break from the city’s rich history, cuisine, and nightlife, here are some cool day trips from Copenhagen to give you a true Scandinavian adventure.

Helsingør and Kronborg Castle

Helsingor DenmarkA brief drive to the north of the city and you’re going to find the coastal town of Helsingør, home of the impressive Kronborg Castle. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, this area might be most famous for featuring in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, where it was known as “Elsinore,” but the real Danish royal history and Renaissance architecture are enthralling in their own right.

You can take your time walking through its grand halls, admiring the beautiful tapestries, and exploring the casemates beneath the castle. Helsinger is a beautiful town in its own right, full of charming streets and a picturesque harbor, with cozy cafes to stop in for a bite and a coffee.

The location itself is beautiful, too. Set amongst the gorgeous Øresund Strait, its exterior features a sculpture park, surrounded by panoramic sea views in a blend of manmade arts and nature in a way that is very uncommon for any museum or gallery.

There is also the Viking Ship Museum, which takes a deep look into the seafaring past of the nation, including with well-preserved Viking ships and interactive exhibits that lend life to these larger-than-life historical characters. The town itself blends medieval charm with cozy modern comforts, such as cozy cafes and boutique shopping areas.

Malmö, Sweden
